Love on Mount Pleasant

Love on Mount Pleasant

Begin your experience with a welcome glass of Lovedale Semillon before exploring Mount Pleasant’s cellar door spaces, where curated photography and artworks from a private collection set the tone for a thoughtful, visually rich journey. Among these works are pieces by Garry Shead—renowned Australian artist and Archibald Prize winner—whose deeply personal connection to Mount Pleasant adds a unique layer to the experience.

Garry Shead is the nephew of Maurice O’Shea, Mount Pleasant’s legendary founder. When Maurice passed away, Garry was just 14, but the visits to the estate left a lasting impression. Years later, those memories came to life in a series of evocative paintings, captured in the book Love on Mount Pleasant. Today, three of these works are proudly displayed in our private dining room.

Following your artful exploration, enjoy a guided tasting of eight premium wines paired with a selection of local and international cheeses. As you sip and savour, you’ll learn about Maurice O’Shea’s legacy—not only as a pioneering winemaker, but as a passionate cook, gardener, and lover of the arts who cherished time spent with family and friends.

This experience celebrates the timeless connection between wine and culture, offering a sensory and artistic journey that honours the spirit of Mount Pleasant and the creative soul of Garry Shead.

Nestled in Pokolbin beneath the Brokenback Range, Mount Pleasant offers visitors a rich heritage experience through its beautifully renovated cellar door and curated tastings that showcase over a century of winemaking excellence.

Mount Pleasant Wines is one of the Hunter Valley’s most iconic and historic wineries, founded in 1921 by Maurice O’Shea, widely regarded as the father of modern Australian winemaking. O’Shea’s pioneering approach to table wines, his meticulous blending techniques, and use of French oak set new standards for quality at a time when fortified wines dominated the market.

Today, Mount Pleasant continues to craft elegant, expressive wines from its four significant vineyard sites, including Lovedale, Rosehill, Old Hill, and Old Paddock—home to some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world, dating back to 1880.

Known for producing benchmark Hunter Valley styles such as Semillon and Shiraz, the estate has earned countless awards and remains celebrated for wines of longevity, balance, and a true sense of place.
