Alowyn Garden is designed along strong symmetrical lines that become blurred by the softness of the spaces and the grace of the trees. There are seven clearly defined areas within the gardens, across seven acres, including a perennial border, a silver birch forest, an edible garden of generous proportions, a parterre garden and a number of display gardens.
The formal parterre garden leads you to a series of enchanting courtyards and display gardens, framed by a wisteria and rose-covered archway 100 metres long, with a sunken garden and a classical fountain as a centre piece.
Visitors exit the gardens through an extensive plant nursery full of great plants, many of which feature in the gardens. They tend to favour heat tolerant and frost hardy plants as they recognise our climate is changing towards extremes of temperatures.

The Yarra Valley has been producing premium wine for more than 150 years. It was Victoria's first wine growing district and is known as the birthplace of Victoria's wine industry. Vines were first planted in 1838 and viticulture spread rapidly through the 1860s and 1870s. However, increased demand for fortified wine saw Yarra Valley wine production cease in 1921. Replanting began in the late 1960s and by the early 1990s the area under vine passed the high point of the 19th century.
