King & Alpine Valleys Wine Trails
Explore north-east Victoria
With the Beechworth and King Valley wine regions in close proximity, this part of Victoria has become increasingly well regarded for the quality of elegant red and crisp white wines produced by a number of renowned wineries.
Long, moderate growing conditions produce high-quality grapes with intense fruit flavours and natural acidity. 33 different grape varieties ranging from traditional Chardonnay and Shiraz through to less common grapes such as Sauvignon Vert and Nebbiolo are successfully grown on these hillsides and valleys. As with all alpine areas, the climate is strongly Continental, with spring frost the major viticultural hazard, followed by autumn frost prior to harvest.
The region encompasses the four valleys surrounding the Ovens, Buffalo, Buckland and Kiewa rivers. Victoria’s High Country has become a popular destination for outdoor adventurers, food lovers and wine enthusiasts alike. The valleys are abundant with premium fresh produce including nuts, berries, hops, game meat and freshwater fish available from farm gates and on the local menus of some of Victoria’s finest regional restaurants, breweries and wineries.
Formally recognised as an official wine region in 2000, the Alpine Valleys Wine Region is actually one of the oldest wine-growing districts in Victoria. The knowledge of the pioneers of generations past has shaped the industry and paved the way for an adventurous new breed of growers and winemakers.
