Mandoon Estate renames Hotel to Maya Maya

Mandoon Estate is thrilled to announce a name change for their hotel The Colony to Maya Maya.

In 2022, Mandoon Estate embarked on a transformative journey by initiating the "REFLECT" Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). As a crucial step in this endeavour, the Hotel underwent a meaningful name change from “The Colony” to “Maya Maya,” symbolizing the Estate's unwavering commitment to fostering cultural awareness and inclusivity. This change was a result of collaborative efforts with local Traditional Custodians, guided by Nelson Waite, Mandoon Estate’s Cultural Development Coordinator, and underscores the historical resonance of the new name.

The significance of "Maya Maya" reaches back thousands of years to the land's rich history. The area where Mandoon now stands was of great importance to the Whadjuk Noongar people, serving as a cherished camping location with abundant resources. The adjacent Jane Brook suburb held sacred sites and camping areas for the Whadjuk Noongar people, highlighting the deep historical connection. By renaming the hotel "Maya Maya," meaning "Camp," Mandoon Estate pays homage to this heritage, acknowledging and respecting the ancestral legacy of the Whadjuk Noongar people. To visually represent this transformation, Mandoon enlisted the talents of Samaja Miller, a young Aboriginal artist from the Minang and Kaneang communities, who crafted the new logo that embodies these values.
