Clare Valley

The land of the Ngadjuri people, Traditional Owners of the Clare Valley region.

The Clare Valley, located in South Australia, is one of the country's oldest and most renowned wine regions. Situated about 120 kilometers north of Adelaide, the region is celebrated for its high-quality Riesling, often regarded as among the finest in the world. The area's elevation, cool nights, and warm days create ideal conditions for producing wines with vibrant acidity and intense aromatics.

Clare Valley’s winemaking history dates back to the 1840s, with early European settlers planting the first vines. Today, the region boasts over 40 wineries, ranging from historic estates to boutique producers. While Riesling is the star, the valley also produces excellent Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a distinctive elegance and regional character.

The region is divided into several sub-regions, including Watervale and Polish Hill, each with unique soil types and microclimates that influence the wine style. Watervale Rieslings are known for their floral and citrus notes, while Polish Hill wines are more structured and mineral-driven.

In addition to its wines, Clare Valley offers scenic beauty, heritage buildings, and the popular Riesling Trail, a cycling and walking path that connects many of its vineyards. It’s a must-visit for wine lovers seeking exceptional cool-climate wines in a picturesque rural setting.

HISTORY

The Clare Valley has a rich history dating back to the 1840s, when European settlers, particularly Jesuit priests, began planting vines. One of the earliest wineries, Sevenhill Cellars, was established by the Jesuits in 1851 and still operates today. The region's early success was driven by its ideal climate and fertile soil, which proved perfect for viticulture. Over the decades, Clare Valley became especially known for its distinctive Riesling, helping to shape Australia's reputation for high-quality white wines. Today, it blends heritage with innovation, continuing to thrive as a prominent and historic wine-producing area.
