Of all the islands to be marooned upon, I choose Australia.  We are incredibly fortunate to have a plentiful supply of unforgettable experiences close to home, regardless of which state we live in.  In the spirit of exploring the gems on our doorstep, we've put together a selection of weekenders in our wine regions that will satisfy your urge to explore, without the stress of air travel.

First up: McLaren Vale

Nestled between the Mount Lofty Ranges and white sandy beaches, just over 45 minutes from Adelaide, the charming region of McLaren Vale offers picture-postcard landscapes of rolling hills, vineyards and a spectacular coastline.  There is more than enough here to occupy a long weekend and everything is easily accessible by car.  

As well as exceptional wine, the region is know for its produce, which is on offer at its 110 wineries and 65 cellar doors, five-star retreats, quirky cafés and funky art galleries.  Ultimate Wineries: d'Arenberg, Wirra Wirra Wines and Gemtree Wines each offer a unique wine education experience that will ensure you leave the region weighed down with newly acquired knowledge (and a few bottles for the cellar).
