Being Biodynamic
Demystify biodynamics with a bite to eat and a glass of wine
Gemtree's 306 acres of vineyards are certified organic and biodynamic. For owners Melissa and Mike, it is not just about winemaking, it is about setting new standards for sustainable, generational farming.
Gemtree's sustainably built Tasting Room takes in elevated views over McLaren Vale to the ocean beyond. Located at the Cellar Door is the Gemtree Biodynamic Hut, an informal interactive experience providing visitors with a deeper understanding of biodynamic viticulture. Adjacent to the Tasting Room is the 1km Gemtree Ecotrail, a meandering path through 10 hectares of regenerated natural bushland, offering visitors a connection to the surrounding land that inspires Gemtree's guiding philosophies.
Paul and Jill Buttery established the Gemtree vineyards in McLaren Vale in 1980. Now their daughter Melissa Brown (nee Buttery) is the Biodynamic Viticulturist and her husband, Mike Brown is the Chief Winemaker and Managing Director.
Mike and Melissa’s philosophy is simple - minimal intervention in the winemaking process and a more environmentally conscious farming system to produce certified organic and biodynamic wines which are powerful, concentrated, and express the true characteristics of each grape variety and the region.
The story of Gemtree has grown to mean so much more than a fable shared with the Buttery and Brown children. It came from Melissa and Mike’s passion for the environment and acknowledgement of the importance of the vineyard ecosystem. It symbolises everything that the brand stands for.
McLaren Vale is famous for its intensely flavoured Shiraz as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Grenache. Nestled between rolling hills and a picturesque coastline approximately 35 km south of Adelaide, the region has a Mediterranean climate that is ideal for grape growing.
