Celebrating Old Vine Day

Celebrated on 1 August each year, Old Vine Day acknowledges the rich heritage and resilience of the world's oldest grapevines.

Australia's winemaking and viticultural history dates back to the early 19th century, and the country boasts some of the oldest grapevines in the world. Grown in ancient geology and complex terroirs, some of these treasured vines are over 150 years old.

Here are two unforgettable experiences from Ultimate Winery Experiences Australia where you can explore and appreciate old vines.

Yalumba Nursery and Grenache Discovery, Barossa Valley, SA

In the Barossa subregion of Vine Vale, Yalumba Nursery has been renowned for cloning, growing, and supplying grapevines across Australia since 1975. The nursery is surrounded by ancient Grenache vineyards, some of the oldest in the world, which produce exceptional wines.

This experience takes you from vine bud to glass. Start with a tour of the nursery, learning about vine grafting. Then, stroll through the historic vineyards and taste wines among the vines. End with a Cooper’s Lunch Platter at the Yalumba Wine Room, paired with your favourite Grenache.

Vasse Felix The Cellar Experience, Margaret River, WA

In Margaret River, Vasse Felix offers a journey through the region’s oldest vines, planted in 1967 by founder Dr. Tom Cullity. The tour includes a walk through these historic vines and a private tasting inside The Vault, Vasse Felix’s wine museum.

Enjoy a guided tasting of current vintages and a back vintage Cabernet and Chardonnay selected by the Estate Sommelier. Conclude with a five-course tasting menu at the award-winning Vasse Felix Restaurant, paired with Icon wines.

Cheers to Old Vine Day - a tribute to the enduring legacy of winemaking.
