It is with great pleasure we share with you the exciting announcement of two new South Australian wineries to the UWEA family: Wirra Wirra in McLaren Vale and St Hugo in the Barossa Valley. The success of South Australia as a major wine tourism destination reflects considerable investment over recent years and we're thrilled to see the state receiving so much positive attention.
Wirra Wirra
From the establishment of the McLaren Vale winery in the late 1800s by South Australian cricketer and larrikin Robert Strangways Wigley, to the construction of a medieval siege machine to honour the memory of modern day proprietor, the late Greg Trott, Wirra Wirra has been built on a spirit of adventure. It’s this spirit that has led Wirra Wirra to an $850,000 upgrade of its winery facilities, creating a world class tourism destination with a range of new attractions to target visitors from Adelaide and beyond.
With an ambition to provide a showcase venue for McLaren Vale and the Fleurieu Peninsula, Wirra Wirra has created the perfect environment for visitors to explore McLaren Vale winemaking past and present and to discover the connection between fresh local produce and the wines that have made the region famous.
A range of experiences are on offer; from the Classic McLaren Vale - an introduction to the characteristics of cabernet, grenache and shiraz through a masterclass in Trott’s Cellar, to Wirra Wirra’s most extensive tour, The Signature Day Tour - giving visitors access to all of the attractions at Wirra Wirra including the famous medieval siege machine, followed by a blending class, private tasting and lunch.
St Hugo
Located in the world-renowned Barossa Valley, the Home of St Hugo honours the visionary leader; Hugo Gramp who successfully built Gramp & Sons winery into an industry pillar, inspiring progress across future generations of the Gramp family.
The newly built Home of St Hugo is located within the ruins of William Jacob’s winery, built over 150 years ago. The additions to the site have been built and designed sympathetically to tie in with the old ruins. The site comprises of the St Hugo Tasting Room and St Hugo Restaurant.
Visitors can enjoy guided tastings, visits to the vineyard, bespoke experiences, along with specially crafted wine flights in The Lounge and superb regional cuisine in The Restaurant.
Among the exciting experiences on offer at St Hugo are the Chef's Table Experience - a personally guided tour of the historic site followed by an exclusive wine tasting and 8-course menu at the Chef’s Table and the Legacy Experience - a helicopter flight followed by a private tasting of the finest old vintages and special blends finishing with an 8-course lunch.
