Sleep among the vines: 7 unique winery stays
If you're a wine enthusiast dreaming of more …
As the rolling hills of the Barossa Valley awaken each day to the gentle hum of nature, one iconic winery has been quietly crafting its legacy for nearly two centuries. This year, Yalumba, Australia’s oldest family-owned winery, celebrates its monumental 175th anniversary—a milestone steeped in history, innovation, and a commitment to sustainability.
On November 17, 2024, Yalumba marked this historic occasion with a series of heartfelt events. In the morning, the team gathered at the ‘Signature Vineyard’ for a symbolic tree-planting ceremony. This vineyard, nestled against the stunning backdrop of the Barossa Valley, is not only home to Cabernet and Shiraz vines destined for Yalumba’s renowned “The Signature” wine but is also a testament to the winery’s dedication to environmental stewardship.
Yalumba’s Winemaker and Head of Sustainability, Louisa Rose, reflected on the significance of the day:
“Today has been a meaningful experience for our team to actively contribute to a more sustainable future. It’s special for each of them to give back to the land, especially those not typically involved in our daily viticultural work.”
Later, the Yalumba team came together for a celebratory lunch on the lawns of the iconic Yalumba Clocktower, a moment to honour both their storied past and their ambitious future.
The Hill-Smith family has been at the helm of Yalumba for six generations, each contributing to the winery’s remarkable resilience and innovation. Fifth-generation proprietor Robert Hill-Smith shared:
“This anniversary is not only a nod to years passed. It is a reflection of our resilience and a commitment to mastering our craft, generation after generation. While we celebrate our past 175 years, we keep our eyes firmly set on the next 175.”
From its humble beginnings in 1849, when founder Samuel Smith settled in Angaston, Yalumba has grown into a symbol of excellence and inclusivity. The name “Yalumba,” derived from the Peramangk language, meaning “all the country around,” reflects the Hill-Smith family’s respect for the land and its rich cultural history.
